The Art of Shallow Breathing

The art of shallow breathing
Is to restrict the air
To a small cup's width
Lest you stir the beasts
Couched deep below.

They are formless,
Angry monsters.
Heavy and lazy.
They feel like mist
And strangulation.

Dare to let go,
Or even forget,
And fill those neglected spaces;
They will trap the blood
To your head.

Clenched tight,
Until you return again
To that old technique,
Perfected over years,
Of shallow breathing.
